Red Crushed Brick: Where It Looks Best & Where to Skip It

¾ Red Crushed Brick delivery across Toronto and Vaughan

This warm red decorative aggregate is fired clay brick crushed into angular ¾ inch chips. It works best on garden paths, flower bed borders, and low maintenance ground cover, where its colour adds contrast and its open texture lets rainwater drain freely. It is not built for structural bases or heavy daily traffic.

Most yards across the GTA are some mix of green grass and grey stone. If you want something warmer, brick chips are one of the simplest upgrades you can make. At We Deliver Gravel, we deliver this material to homeowners and landscapers every week, and the questions below are the ones we hear most before someone places an order.

What is Red Crushed Brick?

Red Crushed Brick is fired clay brick broken down into angular pieces about ¾ of an inch across. The colour comes from the clay itself, so the red runs right through every piece instead of sitting on the surface like a dye. It is a versatile, durable material that brings warmth and character to an outdoor space without adding much upkeep.

Did You Know? The ¾ size is the same sizing people search for with 3/4 gravel and 3/4 crushed stone. Angular pieces at this size lock together far better than round stone, which is why brick chips stay put on paths instead of rolling underfoot.

What does Red Crushed Brick look like once it is down?

Freshly spread, it has a warm, earthy look with natural variation from orange red to deeper burgundy. That mix of tones gives it more depth than a single flat colour.

After rain, the red deepens noticeably. Many of our customers say that is their favourite part.

It pairs especially well with:

  • Green lawns and leafy perennials
  • Black metal or dark steel edging
  • Grey concrete, flagstone, or limestone
  • Red brick homes, where it ties the yard to the house

If you are going for a Mediterranean or classic heritage look, few materials get you there as quickly.

Where should you use Red Crushed Brick?

Garden paths and walkways: A brick chip path feels firmer than one made from round stone, and it drains well after a downpour. Solid edging on both sides keeps the path neat for years.

Flower beds and borders: A ring of red around trees, shrubs, and planting beds makes greenery pop. It also gives your lawn a crisp edge that is easy to mow along.

A mulch alternative that stays put: Wood mulch breaks down and needs topping up every spring. Red Crushed Brick does not rot, float away in heavy rain, or blow around in wind. If you are weighing your options, our guide to mulch types for landscaping covers when mulch still makes more sense.

Driveway topping and parking areas: Brick chips can also be used on driveways and parking pads as a decorative top layer. The key is what sits underneath: a properly compacted Granular A base carries the weight, while the brick provides the colour and drainage. This works best for lighter, everyday residential use rather than constant heavy trucks.

Downspout splash areas and soggy spots: The City of Toronto’s Mandatory Downspout Disconnection Program has homeowners disconnect downspouts from the sewer. The City recommends adding a pipe extension to carry roof water away from the house and foundation. A bed of brick chips where that water lands slows the flow, reduces erosion, and looks far tidier than bare soil.

Small decorative accents: Around mailboxes, along fence lines, beside fire pits, and in rock gardens, small patches of red add instant contrast. For more inspiration, browse our gravel landscaping ideas that boost curb appeal.

Where should you skip it?

Brick chips are a finishing material, not a foundation. Choose something else when you need:

  • A structural base under a patio, shed, or driveway. Granular A is the right call here, and our Granular A driveway base guide explains why.
  • A soft surface for bare feet or dogs. Pea gravel is gentler.
  • Paver bedding. HPB or concrete sand is designed for that job.
  • Heavy commercial or truck traffic. Fired clay is softer than limestone, so a harder crushed stone holds up better under constant heavy loads.

How do you install Red Crushed Brick so it lasts?

  1. Clear the area: Remove grass, roots, and weeds, then rake the soil level.
  2. Lay landscape fabric: It stops the chips from sinking into the soil and blocks most weeds from below.
  3. Install edging. Steel, aluminum, or stone edging keeps the chips contained and the lines crisp.
  4. Add a base for walkways and driveways: Compact 3 to 4 inches of Granular A for paths, and more for driveways.
  5. Spread to depth: About 2 inches for decorative beds and 2 to 3 inches for paths.
  6. Rake and tamp: Level the surface, then give paths a light tamp to settle the pieces.

Quick Tip: Fresh brick chips can carry a little red dust. Give the area a good rinse with the hose once spreading is done, and keep a doormat at any path that leads indoors.

How much Red Crushed Brick do you need?

Material is sold by the cubic yard, and our ¾ Red Crushed Brick is currently listed at $125 per yard plus delivery. As a guide, one yard covers about 160 square feet at 2 inches deep, or about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep.

Use this formula: length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft) ÷ 27 = cubic yards. Add around 10 percent for settling and uneven ground. Our gravel calculator does the math for you, and our guide on how to calculate gravel needs walks through odd shapes and slopes.

Can you get it delivered to a tight Toronto backyard?

Yes. Narrow side yards and fenced lots are common in older Toronto neighbourhoods, and a dump truck cannot always reach the spot where the material goes. Our stone slinger throws material over fences and into hard to reach areas. You can read how it works in our post on gravel delivery for tight Toronto spaces.

Our Gravel Delivery in Toronto covers Queen West, The Annex, High Park, Roncesvalles, Leslieville, The Beaches, Don Mills, Willowdale, Scarborough, and Etobicoke. We also deliver throughout Vaughan, including Woodbridge, Maple, Kleinburg, Thornhill, Vellore Village, and Concord.

Everything arrives loose, so there are no bags to haul or throw away. You can compare options in our full range of gravel products before you decide.
